Carto switch review8/6/2023 ![]() However, during the times I did struggle I found myself frustrated to the point of waning interest. The puzzles themselves require thinking outside the box at times, but I rarely found myself struggling. The puzzle mechanics come into play alongside this, with many of the inhabitants giving you clues how to complete them or unlock the next piece of story. The actual movement of tiles and the “rules” on which tiles can be placed alongside is so similar to the popular boardgame “Carcassonne” that anyone who has played that will instantly be able to pick this up and play. By positioning the tiles, new portions of the world open up to you, new areas to explore and new parts of the map to discover. The tile manipulation mechanic is where the main gameplay takes center stage. Why walk when you can bring the map to you? The tile moving mechanic – reminiscent of popular board games This has the ultimate effect of moving characters, creating paths or unlocking hidden areas to progress. These tiles can be moved into position or rotated to change the landscape before you. The world is divided into tiles that contain a combination of land and sea. Which is an interesting premise considering you are able to literally change the world they live in! Evil villain laughter aside, Carto has the ability to manipulate the world map. Whilst doing so though, you are also tasked with helping the inhabitants live their lives and in turn, learn about their world. As you traverse each world your goal is to collect map pieces to flesh out the world and return home. ![]() You awaken on one of the islands you had just previously shifted. What follows is a heartwarming story with family at the heart of it. As Carto is swept off her ship, the consequences of the storm she has concocted using her cartography powers unfolds. Already, with the art style and the reference to a grandma, the Zelda fanboy in me awakens, but only long enough for the story to take hold. You start the game as Carto, a young girl, living on some sort of sky ship with her Grandma. ![]() Carto – Better than a GPS! Exploring the world introduces you to a wealth of characters But instead, lets chart a course and explore the world of Carto. There are so many elements drawn from a wealth of gaming pedigrees that attaching a label to it is difficult. ![]() But on first glance, it is difficult to place Carto. Their most recent endeavour, Carto, alongside Sunhead Games looks to be another feather in their cap. Humble Games are starting to develop a bit of a reputation, at least with myself, for publishing fun and interesting indie titles.
